Six hours in Philly

June 20, 2014 Karen Huber

On our way back from America, we found ourselves with ten or so hours to spare between flights (as you do). So a family member (who shall remain nameless) gave us some cash, told us to rent a car and have some fun. And fun we did have.

So many of the little neighbourhoods in the city centre were so beautiful, but often passed in a blur before I could get out the camera. Here we were stopped at a light and I loved the mustard yellow paint against the colonial architecture.

Good times were had at the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, where a group of militia men stormed in, tore down King George's coat of arms, and a new nation began.

I often chase the children around, just pointing and shooting in their general direction. This photo is a fluke; she makes art out of anything.

I don't know what happened, but somewhere along the way we grew a young man.

As you can see, driving around town (coupled with the 4am wake-up call) is highly conducive to an extended mid-afternoon naptime.

Remind me how I'll wander

June 3, 2014 Karen Huber

I woke up to sunlight this morning. It was so bright, so early, and I couldn't remember whose bed I was in or which country I awoke in. Jet lag will do this to you, make your head spin so your brain feels like silly puddy in the hands of this great big earth. The house was quiet still, with the children all sleeping in and sleeping off our long day of travel, so that when I came downstairs in silent bare feet, only the man was there to greet me. The man, the sun and a good cup of coffee.

This is home. Ireland has welcomed me back when I wasn't sure she would....

10 ways to reconnect with family (when time is running short)

June 2, 2014 Karen Huber

As I write this I’m flying over the big blue ocean, a 4-year-old contentedly playing a LeapPad game next to me, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty showing on the tiniest airplane screen you’ve ever seen. My little sister is getting married, so I’m...

Here & Now (and a belated Hello)

May 31, 2014 Karen Huber

Leigh tells me it's about time for the monthly What I'm Into blog link-up. And right now I'm underneath a burgundy throw, feet up on an Amish ottoman, watching The Daily Show from a Kansas sitting room.

Flux

April 29, 2014 Karen Huber

A soul-friend of mine sent me a quote today, about writing and God and being confused, and how sometimes writing about God IS about being confused. One of these days she'll show up here and share her own confusing God thoughts with you, because I think you need to hear them like I needed to today... I'm confused, too. Not just about God and writing, but because I'm in flux. And this blog is in flux because I am in flux.

And my migraines have returned, with such shocking full force that I've had to step away from the computer, from the kitchen, and occasionally from the children, just to catch my breath and close my eyes and pray it passes. They tend to come when I'm distracted and anxious, when the trees are sprouting new blooms and the seasons change, when the world itself is in flux.
