The Year of Submit

So you're probably wondering what happened to my great big one word of 2015. Well, you'll have to pop over to Velvet Ashes to read all about it, but here's the bottom line:

We can fit any word we want into the story of our life. This year could’ve been the year of Grief, the year of Rejection, the year of Income Shortfall, the year of Eczema. And any word we choose can dissipate with the first thaw of Spring. I regret to inform you that in choosing any One Word, you will be humbled. We can start strong and trip over our good intentions, hiding those words away with all our forgotten plans or crushed hopes. I may have done that, too, this year.

I was hoping I'd have something to tell you. That the extended silence masking three months of hard work would lead to a grand announcement. That my one word for the year would be fortuitous and you all would say, "Wow! Amazing! Knew you had it in you!" But it's not. And I don't.

Last week I unveiled my One Word for 2015 - submit - and the three things I want to focus on this year:

Submit my work and to a writing lifestyle
Submit to the Spirit
Submit in our marriage

The very first thought that popped into my head was: submit my work. I want to be writing more, with intention, thought and research, and I should be submitting it. The next step in a writing lifestyle for me is that I begin to treat my hobby as my (highly flexible, part-time, with a kid on my lap and a jug of milk on my desk) job...

"I'll try," "No, thanks" and One Word

Try did not work for me. Come April or May of last year, I was done with my "One Word" resolution of trying.

My familiar mantra of "but I tried so hard" failed me in the end, and instead of trying, instead of saying yes and just seeing what happens, I sat. I waited. I relied on others. And I said no. A lot. My year of "I'll try" turned into my year of "no, thanks." It was my year of slowness, my year of "not by might or power." This, of course, was exactly what I needed it to be.
